Power 2021

As an artist, the possibilities for creation are endless. I use this concept to my advantage, pushing my own boundaries in terms of process and medium, while drawing from numerous experiences within my life. Beginning in painting, my work has grown into much more experimental methods through my pursuit of graduate studies. Combining the skills built through trial and error with the desire to branch out as an artist, my current body of work builds upon the concepts of family, culture, emotion, and change.

To understand my work as an artist, my process must be broken down between theme and technique. While rooted in more traditional methods, my work has recently transitioned into the digital realm. While maintaining a need for physical products, various factors have led me to my current body of work. A response to a global pandemic and newfound motherhood, my tool of choice is Procreate, initially out of necessity which has grown into preference. I begin by drawing as I normally would, then push each piece using pattern, movement, texture, and space. As each piece develops, I embrace instinct and experiment with a variety of designs before finishing a piece.

In relation to the theme, I utilize two prominent topics in my work. The first is motherhood, rooted in the overwhelming peace I have found since giving birth. This subject is approached through the display of growth, the progression of time, emotional and physical perception, and symbolic or literal representation of life with a child. The second theme within my work is the idea of culture, which has persisted in my art since I began my creative journey. As an immigrant, I combine my current life within the United States with my mentality rooted in my home of Vietnam. It is important for me as an artist and an individual to incorporate both of my environments as a displayed appreciation for the influence each has in my life.

While I continue to build upon my current body of work, I am unsure what direction I will go in upon its conclusion. This being said, there are a few factors I am certain of, the need to experiment in all aspects and the attempt to express my own experiences to an audience. As I grow as an artist and a mother, I will continue to merge the two. While my methodology for creation is easiest at the current time, I know I will work in different ways in the future. There are so many possibilities, I plan on taking advantage of as many as I can as an artist and as a person.
